Every country around the world has a set date for its Independence Day. People frequently ask about the UAE's national day. Every year on December 2nd, the United Arab Emirates celebrates UAE Independence Day as a National Day.

UAE National Day:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) celebrates National Day on December 2nd of each year. It is a special day celebrated by both locals and expatriates throughout the Emirates. More than just a holiday from work, the UAE National Day serves as a unifying event for the Emirati population to show their affection and patriotic love for their country, as this day commemorates the Federation of the Emirates.

Every Emirate organizes a series of events to celebrate this special day. Concerts, art shows, a fireworks display, and shopping sales are just a few of the activities planned for National Day in the UAE.

All National Day celebrations in the UAE follow the theme Spirit of the Union, which was inspired by the late ruler Sheikh Zayed's vision. Spirit of the Union emphasizes the bond that unites all Emiratis, allowing them to coexist peacefully, celebrate a distinct heritage, and shape the nation's future. Everything you need to know about the United Arab Emirates National Day is right here.

History of UAE National Day:

The UAE was not always the powerful nation that it is today. In reality, the country was divided into rival tribal groups that occupied different areas. In 1820, Britain entered the picture and offered the tribes protection in exchange for some control over the land. Desperate for peace, the various tribes accepted this offer and assigned dispute resolution to Britain. After experiencing financial losses, Britain withdrew from the alliance in 1968.

After the departure of Britain from the scenario, the rulers of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Al-Ain, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain decided to come together. The emirates declared their independence from Britain on December 2, 1971, and became the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Ras Al Khaimah, the seventh emirate, later joined this union. This union and their independence from colonial rule were achieved peacefully!

The national flag of the UAE as we know it today was raised to celebrate the unification of the seven emirates and the declaration of the United Arab Emirates, and the first president of the UAE was chosen — Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed was the Emir of Abu Dhabi, the most prosperous of the seven emirates. Today, the UAE is regarded as a middle-power and influential nation, with an expanding economy, plenty of oil reserves, and some of the world's tallest buildings. However, all UAE citizens recognize that the power they have today is the result of the Seven Emirates' decision to unite in 1971.

Cultural Celebrations

The streets of the UAE come alive with an explosion of colors on National Day, as citizens and residents participate in various cultural celebrations. Traditional dances, music performances, and art exhibitions highlight the country's rich cultural tapestry. The vibrant festivities reflect the UAE's unity in diversity, where people from various backgrounds come together to celebrate their shared identity.

The Flag Hoisting Ceremony

The grand flag hoisting ceremony is one of the highlights of the National Day celebrations. The UAE flag is raised high in a show of national pride, with its vibrant colors of red, green, white, and black. This symbolic act is not only a visual spectacle, but it also serves as a powerful symbol of the country's unity and commitment to its shared values.

Fireworks Extravaganza

The dazzling colors and patterns that illuminate the skyline are a metaphor for the nation's journey, which has been marked by resilience, growth, and prosperity. Families and friends gather to witness this visual spectacle, creating lasting memories and reinforcing the spirit of community.

Reflecting on Achievements

Aside from the festivities, UAE National Day is a time to reflect on the nation's accomplishments. In a relatively short period of time, the UAE has undergone remarkable transformation and development. From an economy based primarily on oil, the country has diversified into sectors such as tourism, technology, and renewable energy, establishing itself as a global player.
